about me
My name is Darren Puscas and I was born and raised in Saskatchewan, the home of Canadian Medicare. I, like most people in Canada, have always been keenly aware of the value of our system of universal health care.
I don’t pretend to be an expert on the intricacies of health care in either country, but I do have a background in politics, labour studies, corporate research, community organizing, and economics which aide me in my understanding of the politicians and corporate lobby behind the backlash against U.S. healthcare reform.
I have lived and worked in the U.S.twice, once in L.A. and once in Washington D.C. I noticed while there that health insurance (if you have it, how much it cost, how good is the coverage) was frequently a topic of conversation and concern.
This is not meant to be a nationalist, ‘were better than you’ website, as I am one to have many, many criticisms of Canada (hello, Prime Minister Harper, for a start). Health care just happens to be an area where Canada does stand out, though Australia and the UK are often cited as even having better universal health systems than Canada.
When not writing this blog, I’m an academic researcher, social activist, and I’m involved in documentary video production.
At the risk of sounding even sportier than I am, I’m absolutely crazy about baseball, despite living in hockey country. Go Blue Jays!
Oh, and Roughriders, of course!
I currently live in Toronto.
