why do I care about U.S. health?

as a Canadian, people ask me why I have a blog about the U.S. health care system and the American fight for single payer.  Here’s why…

1. everyone deserves access and affordable health care is a universal human right. I don’t like to see my neighbors to the south hurt so badly by lacking access.
Americans have the right to quality information on this.

2.  our system in Canada is under threat, as cynical calls to privatize are heard from industry and  politicians who have a lot to gain.   If our powerful, private market oriented neighbor gets a universal system, it would reduce the threat to Canadian health care.

3.  fear of losing their health care is an obstacle to U.S. workers fighting for social change and for their rights.    With that obstacle gone, they may be more openings for building long-term change through social movement building.  This makes U.S. health care a key political movement of our time.

4. I simply can’t sit and watch insurance companies making so much money off of sickness and death. People are dying or falling into financial ruin from an expensive system that is mostly just a money maker for corporations where health is not a top priority.  Though I don’t live in the U.S., I can’t just watch this without some kind of stand!
